Derwentwater shore, Lake District (approx 5.25 miles)

Map: Sheet OL4 The English Lakes: NW area
Start: Lodore landing stage (NY264192)
End: Keswick town centre (NY265235)
Route: Most of the route is along level, clearly defined paths. We were staying in Keswick (at the Keswick Park) and caught the launch to Lodore - but there are very few sailings or buses in winter (see links below).
More info: More about: Keswick from Keswick Tourism Association

Parking: Any of the public car parks in Keswick.
Boats and buses: Keswick Launch Company for times of sailings between Leswick & Lodore;
North West Journey Planner for Borrowdale buses and buses to Keswick.
Refreshments: A wide choice of pubs, restaurants and tea rooms in Keswick. We enjoyed afternoon tea at Portinscale Tea Rooms.

Derwentwater, from launch If you arive at Lodore by boat, walk along the path to the road and turn right. If you arrive by bus, continue walking south along the road. Pass the Lodore Hotel and public toilets on then follow public footpth sign on right in the direction of Manesty.
bridge over the River Derwent Follow the clear footpath, leading over the footbridge and follow footpath often over boardwalks. Continue along paths close to lake shore (this entails turning right at a number of forks in the path).
Derwentwater The first fork at which you shouldn't turn right is the one which has a sign saying, "Hawes End jetty only."

At junction of paths and road bear right, following sign for Portinscale and Keswick.

After passing through a kissing gate go straight on, rather than bearing right. At the next fork, either route can be chosen: the right fork goes via Nichol End whilst the path ahead leads over the only hilly path on the walk. Both routes meet at the junction with road.

Turn right when path meets the road. Follow the road to Portinscale. Once in the village turn right down the road which is signed, "No through road," and, "Public footpath to Keswick, 1 mile."
suspension footbridge across River Derwent The road becomes a footpath, follow this over a suspension bridge. Bear right to continue along footpath across fields. The path joins the road by a bridge over the River Greta. Turn right to return to Keswick town centre.
