Humphrey Head (approx. 6 miles)

Map: Sheet 7 The English Lakes - South Eastern area

Start: Kent's Bank Railway Station, nr Grange-over-Sands (SD397757)

This walk is based on one from Walks in the Lake District - where you will find a much more detailed description of the walk from Kent's Bank to the end of Humphrey Head than I would have written. We had intended to return back along the beach, as suggested on the Walks in the Lake District site - however the tide was in!

Despite the high tide, we did climb the stile, out on to the rocks. When we returned, we noticed an information board giving details of a permissive path. We followed this to the right, through woodland filled with spring flowers, and returned to the main path close to the Outdoor Pursuit Centre.

We retraced our steps until we reached Wyke Farm, where we climbed the stone stile on the left, turned right and followed the path under the railway. We continued along the path, with a narrow stream on our right. The path emerges in Allithwaite, close to the village pub (which was our reason for this diversion). Sadly there was no refreshment as the pub had closed at 2.30 - and we arrived after 3 p.m.!

To return to Kents's Bank we walked up Jack's Hill, turned right at the cross roads, then descended along the road to the station. We hadn't managed to obtain any alcoholic refreshment, but did enjoy a coffee from the coffee shop in Abbot Hall.
