Patterdale to Silver Crag - Lake District (approx 4 miles)

Map: Sheet 5 The English Lakes - North Eastern area
Start: Car Park, Patterdale (NY395159)
Route: The route is along clear tracks and paths - most are rather stony underfoot. There is one short, steepish section.

From the car park, turn right along the road toward Glenridding. Just beyond the school building, take the farm track to Side Farm.
Go through the farm yard (the stables are now a tea room) and turn left, following signs for Howtown and Sandwick. Continue to follow this track past the campsite and above the lake shore until you round Silver Crag. Where the path continues ahead following the lake shore, turn right and climb the path round the back of Silver Crag. At the highest point, the path provides magnificent view in both directions (the photograph is taken looking south).
The path runs parallel to the outward journey, but higher up the fellside, providing views across Ullswater to Glenridding and Helvelyn. Walk past disused quarry workings beyond Side Farm, then take a path on the right, which descends to a cottage. Go through the gate, and turn right. This track returns you to Side Farm, from where you retrace the original route to Patterdale.
